September 7, 2011

Hello fellow art education majors!!! The minutes for our first meeting are as followed:

Introduction of officers, members & faculty advisor
Presidents: Tiffany LittleJohn & Shyla Sutton
 Publicity Agent: Sunshine Beshears
Treasurer: Denise Kanir
Information: Membership fee $5/ semester
Meeting Dates: We will meet once a month for our regular student chapter NAEA meetings.
Here are the meeting dates for the semester: Wednesday, October 12TH at 6pm, Wednesday,
November 2nd at 6pm. If we are going to meet any other dates throughout the semester you
will be notified ahead of time.
Tate st. Festival!!! Coming really SOON! SEPTEMBER 17, 2011
We will collect materials and make arts& crafts to sell at the festival. This is an annual
fundraiser that the NAEA has participated in. Some of the ideas we came up with at the
meeting were to create bracelets out of buttons, headbands, feather hair clips, records,
and mini magnets. These are all ideas that we think will sale fairly easy. We have set
aside three dates for Tate St. Workshops: SEPTEMBER 9TH @ 4pm, SEPTEMBER 12th
at 6pm, and SEPTEMBER 14TH at 6pm. Please come out and help create items to sell.
Donations of items are also accepted. Last year we had some paintings donated and
they sold quickly! If you cannot make it to any of the workshop dates above feel free to
make things at home and drop them off or contact one of the officers.

Tiffany LittleJohn, Kathryn Chaney ,Taylor Brock, Clemarie Thomas, Leslie Hollowell , Denise Kanir,
Sunshine Beshears, Shyla Sutton

Attendance will be kept for each meeting to keep up with the activity of our members.

It was great seeing new faces !!! Hope to see you all on Friday!

Breaking Down the Barriers: The Faces of Mental Health

From Patrick Kalaw,
Eta Sigma Gamma, National Public Health Honorary
Peer Educator, Friends Helping Friends Program

Hello my name is Patrick Kalaw and I am the Mental Health Chair representing Eta Sigma Gamma, the national Public Health Honorary.  We are putting on a mental health event called "Breaking Down the Barriers: The Faces of Mental Health" which will consist of guest speakers telling stories of their struggles with having a mental health diagnosis.  After that will be a health fair style tabling session with different campus and community resources showcasing what they offer.  The event will be on March 30th from 11am-1pm in the EUC Kirkland room and we invite you and members of National Art Education Association to attend.  I believe this is pertinent information for your organization because creative arts students have shown much higher rates of suicide and suicide attempts than the general population.  If you could forward this to other members of your organization it would be greatly appreciated.  We look forward to seeing you all.

We always appreciate additional helping hands, but here's how it's looking so far:

And for February:

Again, if you are interested in volunteering, please let any of the officers know!

Welcome back, future Art Educators!

Happy beginning of the semester everyone! Hopefully everyone's break was enjoyable and fun-filled.

Our first meeting of the semester is yet to be determined and you will all be notified as soon as a date is established.

Until then...

West Guilford High School needs our assistance in completing their mural that was started last semester. The sign up sheet is posted on facebook and on this blog. We could really use at least 3 people per day to help finish the project up. On Saturdays, as many folks as possible for volunteering would be incredible!

We hope to see your bright and smiling faces soon and best wishes in kicking off a new year!

Upcoming Events

Happy Sunday everyone!

As all of you know, the Tate Street Festival is fast approaching. We're now looking for volunteers for the booth we'll be setting up on Tate Street. I have attached a schedule thus far of people who are going to be there and what times. We're going to be setting up not later than 10/1030 and be there until 6pm.

Ideally, we would like to have 4 people for each shift. We're looking to have 2-hour increment slots (10am-12pm, 12pm-2pm, 2pm-4pm, 4pm-6pm) You can also volunteer for an hour if that's all you've got.

This is a great way to meet new people and earn bonus points in the art department. Even if you're not a member of the NAEA yet, but you'd like to contribute, we'd love for you to be there. Let me or any of the officers know if you'd like to sign up, via e-mail or facebook, or in person if you have the opportunity.

We're going to hold another set of meetings this week before the festival. Thursday Sept. 23 from 12-2pm and Friday Sept. 24 from 1pm-4pm in the art education room.

ALSO: There's an additional chance to volunteer your time coming up. The NAEA will be offering their services to a mural project at West Guilford Highschool. We'll be meeting with a teacher from the school on Thursday and will let everyone know when it'll be starting.

Thanks so much!

This Friday, September 17th, we'll be meeting in room 206 of the Studio Arts building at 2:30pm. Officers will be meeting 30 minutes prior to deliberate.
Bring any donations and all kinds of awesome ideas to share with everyone so we can tackle tasks before the big day, NEXT SATURDAY!

If you have any questions, be sure to email us!

Latest updates for the UNCG NAEA!

The year's starting full-swing and full-force, with a new chapter in the NAEA.

New officers have been elected for the year, and are as follows:
Jessica Sanford - President
Austin Smith - Vice-President
Becky Manning Hiatt - Secretary
Nikki and Tiffany - Publicity Agents

We hope that we'll have tons of new members this year to share in on the fun. If you're on the fence of whether or not you should join, PLEASE come out to the meeting. You can get a taste of what we're all about and hopefully that'll help you decide.

Some very important events/dates everyone should be aware of:
THIS FRIDAY September 10 - WE WILL NOT BE MEETING.
NEXT FRIDAY September 17 - WE WILL BE MEETING!
September 25 is the official day we will set up a booth at the Tate Street Festival to try and raise money for our organization. The UNCG homecoming is held Sep. 20-26, which is when we'll be there.

Art donations for the festival, from anyone, would be AMAZING! Donations include crafts and supplies such as stuffed creatures, pins, magnets, canvas art, most craft-ish items you can think of and paints, clay, cloth, anything to make something of. Donations should be delivered to room 206 in the Art building, but if you can't get there, PLEASE let us know, and we'll be happy to arrange for it to be picked up by one of our members. Jessica is willing to take donations as well, just let us know if you need her phone #.

Of course we realize that we all have pretty hectic schedules this time of year, but please know everyone is more than welcome to work on things on their own time. Halloween crafts are a great idea this time of year, and if anyone has any more ideas on what to make, let us know at the meeting.

We will also be meeting:  (which are all Fridays at 2:30 - 3:30)
September 17
October 15
November 19

Officer meetings are held 2-2:30 (before chapter meetings)

Flyers will be posted in the Gatewood building and around Tate Street. Please tell your friends and family about the festival. We'd like to have as many people come by as possible!

The NAEA will be hosting a seminar in November, in what will probably be 2 sections/days. One day for lecture and the second, consecutive day for hands-on activities. Dates are to be determined. More than likely a Wednesday.

Jessica and Tiffany started off the year with a warm-up round at Maria's, where we dined on delicious Korean sustenance, provided by Maria and her family and friends. We went over some details of NAEA technicalities with Kara Seaford. It was a short visit, but a nice, informal introduction.
